Van Hitler
At what point did he start trying to look like Hitler?

The Orlando Magic: Well, now. After a 4-0 Western Conference road trip that saw them beat the division-leading Lakers, Nuggets and Spurs, the Magic returned home and lost to the Celtics in a game that the Leprechauns controlled from beginning to end. The Magic -- who normally score 101.8 PPG and currently rank fifth in offensive efficiency -- scored only 80 points on 38 percent shooting. They also bricked 15 of their 22 three-point attempts and finished with more turnovers (14) than assists (11). They also missed eight free throws during a game in which every point was a dear and precious thing. (And, oddly, Dwight Howard accounted for only one of those clanks.)

Mind you, Boston's offensive numbers weren't great: 90 points on 46 percent shooting, 0-for-6 on threes, only 9 assists to 11 turnovers. But they cracked down on defense, won the rebounding battle (40-36) and played determined, focused basketball...and Orlando did not.

Stan Van Gundy, blame-taking machine: The Magic clearly had no idea whatsoever how to attack the Celtics' steel curtain defense. And Stan Van Gundy blamed himself. I'm tempted to agree, since it was mentioned before the game that he planned to coach it like it was any other game (since, he reasoned, it was still worth only one win...or one loss). Good call, huh? Said Stan the Man: "I'm pretty big on holding players accountable. On this one, it's me. I've got to find a way for us to get some ball movement and freedom of movement where we can get some shots. So I'm frustrated in myself." Way to take the bullet for your team, Stan. It's gracious of you. But the entire blame can hardly be placed on your porky shoulders. No, I would be remiss not to mention...

Dwight Howard: Superman, huh? Not last night, he wasn't. More like Failman or Can'tstopGlenDavisman (more on that in a second). Shortly after it was announced that Howard was the first player in league history to receive three million All-Star Game votes, he went out and gave the Magic a Jeff Foster-like performance: 11 points (4-for-10), 11 rebounds, 4 turnovers and 6 fouls. Worse was that Doc Rivers made a major adjustment, subbing in Big Baby for Kendrick Perkins to try and pull Howard out of the paint. Not only did it work, but Baby repeatedly burned Dwight with jumpers and finished with a season-high 16 points (6-for-8 from the field, 4-for-4 from the line). Even crazier was that Davis clearly bothered Howard on the defensive end, muscling Dwight off his spots and forcing him into some bad shots.

Long story short: Dwight Howard -- the league's most popular All-Star and a man who was being touted as an MVP candidate before the game -- was thoroughly outplayed by Glen Davis. And you know what that means, right?

'Nuff said.

You know things have gotten out of
hand in a Lakers game when...

The Washington Generals: Look, there's no way to sugarcoat this, so I'm not even going to try. The Generals suffered a 20-point blowout that couldn't have felt any more hopeless if they'd lost by 100. They had no chance whatsoever...which wasn't surprising. They're a nine-win team! The Lakers haven't even lost nine games yet. This was the kind of game that makes me want to turn off all the lights, crank up some Evanescence and sink into a black and inescapable depression. Quick quiz: Best music for a morbid depression -- Evanescence or Journey? Discuss.

Speaking of being depressed, here's what Generals coach Ed Tapscott had to say after his team's brutalization: "They broke us down and beat us up. They play the game at a very high level and they sustain that level. We had some decent moments, but we had far too many bad moments tonight." Just substitute "tonight" with "all season" and you'll be fixed right up, Ed.

DeShawn Stevenson: Okay, Wally Szczerbiak has some competition...

DeShawn

All-Star Voting: Where to start? How about Allen Iverson starting in the East. Or the fact that Kevin Garnett barely beat out Yi Jianlian for a starting spot by 253,004 votes. Or that Bruce Bowen -- a man who's not even starting for his own team!! -- Bowen — came 68,031 short of knocking Amare Stoudemire out of the West's starting lineup...despite STAT's hilarious (if somewhat self-aggrandizing) Vote 4 Amare campaign. I guess what I'm saying is: Can we all admit that there's something wrong with the process?

The Big Cranky: Sometimes I wish he'd just shut up. Here's a dose of what he had to say recently about Dwight Howard: "He's a good player, but everything he's done I've invented, so I'm not impressed. For me to get my eyes wide open about another big man, he'll have to do something that I haven't seen before or something that I haven't invented. Everything that he's done, I've invented it." I dunno, Shaq. Last time I checked, Dwight tends to show up for most of his team's games, including back-to-backs...

Retirement: I'd like to say a special goodbye to Alonzo Mourning, a special player and a true warrior. Sure, he rubbed people the wrong way now and then, like the time he refused to report to Toronto when the Nets traded him to the Raptors, or the many times he flexed and screamed in somebody's face after blocking their shot. But he was as passionate and dedicated to his teams (except the Raptors) as any player I've ever seen. He very much deserves to be the first Miami Heat player to have his jersey retired by the organization.

Dallas Academy: Basketbawful reader William F. sent me an article about Dallas Academy, a tiny school whose girls basketball team recently lost a game 100-0. Yes, you read that correctly: 100 points to no points. It was a beating so savage and brutal that the opposing team, the Covenant School, is suffering a case of "blowout remorse" and therefore is seeking to forfeit the game.

And frankly, they SHOULD feel bad. According to the article, Covenant -- a private Christian school -- was employing a full-court press and jacking up three-pointers in the fourth quarter even though their opponents hadn't, you know, scored a point. And here are some quick facts about the victims: "Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with 'learning differences,' such as short attention spans or dyslexia."

That's right. The Christians were beating up on hapless, learning impaired opponents. I thought they'd be against such a metaphoric feeding to the lions. Jesus does not approve. And they know it. In the statement on the Covenant Web site, Queal said the game "does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition. We humbly apologize for our actions and seek the forgiveness of Dallas Academy, TAPPS and our community."

Jesus palm

Shaq is 36. Howard is 23. I would expect Howard to play back-to-backs, but a much larger 36 year old?

Too bad you didn't mention the TNT pre-game show for WotN. Not sure if anyone else saw it but Payton was INFURIATED that John Stockton had ever been voted a starter in the all-star game ahead of him.

Kenny, Gary, and Chris were supposed to be arguing about who should have been picked this year, but it was just a really awkward/hilarious rant from all three of them about how in this year or that year they were actually the best at their position but their team sucked, their teamates sucked, or fans were just stupid.

It was a little depressing actually.

Blogger Victor said...
How the FUCK did Bruce Bowen get so many votes??? Since when was he popular? I'm so confused.

Shaq invented everything? I didn't know Shaq was playing before Wilt did.

And on a sort of side note to Zo and Shaq, I remember someone saying back in maybe 2007 or so that if Shaq worked as hard as Zo, then he'd still be the best big man in the NBA. And looking back, that sounds pin point accurate.

As for Dwight, it seems like his weakness is dealing with those strong, low center of gravity type players. I remember Maxeill said something like Dwight's legs aren't that strong and once you get under him, he's not too big of a deal during the playoffs last year. And when you think about it, it makes sense. Dwight's upper body strength is massive, but a lot of the wrestling in the paint for position comes from the legs and Dwight's legs are not built for that. They're trained for explosive leaping, not pushing and grinding against other heavy masses.

BTW, Gabe Pruitt racked the only lacktion of the night with a +3 in just over six minutes.

And while the Wizards were at one point (in the first half, mind you) only a possession behind the Lakers (2 points I think it was?), they started the game with five straight bricks while LA racked up a seven to nil lead. Yeah, that sums up the game pretty well.

LOL, GREATEST CAPTCHA OF ALL TIME: "whiner" No joke, that's what it is.

Does anyone else think it's weird that Dwight Howard seems to be working on his mid-post game when he still really has no low-post game to speak of? Dwight Howard should shelve that Duncanesque bank shot from the perimeter till he's learned how to execute a drop step or a jump hook. That way he can command a double team which he can pass out of. Here's a hint Dwight: when you're being totally neutralized by single coverage from guys like Kendrick Perkins and Big Baby Davis, the way to punish the other team for covering you with those guys is not to start taking a bunch of jump shots over them. Instead you need to force the issue at the rim by getting their bigs in foul trouble and/or making it impossible for them not to double team you. Then all your team's shooters will suddenly have the open looks that they should be getting.

If Gary Payton doesn't deserve a WOTN mention for being so upset that Stockton kept getting voted ahead of him to the All Star team, then he definitely should get a mention for saying he doesn't think Tim Duncan should be starting this year, but Amare Stoudemire should be. I don't even think Amare should make the team at all, let alone start; but how can he not think Duncan's been one of the two best forwards in the West so far this year? With Parker and Ginobili missing so much time, who does Payton think has helped carry the Spurs to the record they have? I'm just shocked anyone can underrate Duncan at this point in his career.

The Wizards are bloody awful.

So people ride on Dwight for having one bad game? Wow, I lost a lot of respect for you after that vicious rant, 'bawful. We know you're a Celtics fan and all but have some class, will you?

Blogger Basketbawful said...
I'll get to all the comments at some point, but this is for Big Aaron. You saying you lost respect for me after one post would be like me saying I had lost all respect for Dwight after one bad game. However, that's not what I said.

The wonderful thing about Worst of the Night (or Worst of the Weekend) is that it is entirely self-contained and has nothing to do with my supposed loyalties. Everyone from Mario "The Mario" West to LeBron James can have a horrible game. But one game does not define a player, nor does one instance of my criticizing a player or team define what I do here.

Put it this way. Why don't you do a search of my previous WotNs. You'll probably discover that this is one of maybe two or three mentions that Howard has received this season. I guarantee you that KG and the Celtics have recieved more (and longer) entries.

Hey, I'm sorry if you feel I'm being unfair to Dwight, but the fact is, he played poorly and fouled out when there was still a chance (however slim) for his team to pull out a win. His performance cost his team a home loss against a conference rival. Not only could that loss end up costing the Magic home court against the Celtics in the playoffs (not to buy the cart before the horse) but it also costs them psychologically.

Final analysis: Dwight earned his WotN. It has nothing to do with my supposed classlessnes.

How dare you 'Bawful. How could you make fun of a player about his terrible performance on a site about making fun of players?

Dwight being neutralized by Big Baby was pretty bad. Not as bad as Amare getting completely shut down by Scalabrine though. Remember? KG was center. Scal was PF. Amare couldn't back down Scal because he has zero post game. It was pretty funny. Then again, Scal had a brutal strip on Wade during a fast break so maybe I need to rethink my views. Scal for DPOY?

I can't believe there isn't a "mercy rule" in HS basketball. There are so many situations in high school where one team (regardless of sport) is so vastly superior to the other that they really don't belong on the same court/field/rink/pool/whatever-else-you-wanna-name.

There has to be some sort of mercy rule because things like that really are damaging to the players involved and they fly in the face of why sports should be played in the first place- especially in high school.

I mean, if you go to the playground and get stomped 11-0, you leave, and get back on later, maybe you play against another team or with new teammates and do better. In any case, it's quick, and relatively painless, and doesn't get publicized in the newspapers.

These girls were HUMILIATED mercilessly and publicly; in front of their schools and in the newspapers. Bad juju, man. Sports are lacking in sportsmanship these days, and it's a god damn shame. To offer to "forfeit" the win is just another slap in the face. I think the head coach should be fired and game should be cut from the records. This is high school, dude. These players aren't paid money- they're young kids and as the coach on Teen Wolf said "there's a lot to be learned from losing," but there is absolutely no lesson to be learned from a 100-0 game of basketball.

You're right, Matt. Jesus does not approve.

I can't understand why people say that the allstars should be chosen by the fans because the allstar game is for the fans. The real fans don't decide the all stars anymore.
It's a huge honour for the players to be picked, and it's a reward for having a good first half of the season. If stupid people, lame fans and/or Chinese/Spaniards aren't the ones decide who plays, then those lame fans might actually learn who the current good players are and about good basketball. Hell, maybe the allstar game will become fun to watch again, instead of being a venue for indoor fireworks and MTV puppet-entertainers.
Before the internet was invented, how was it voted on? Simply ballots at the stadiums?

And this whole business of people voting numerous times has got to be controlled. It has taken all the fun out of it for me. Couldn't the NBA take some pride in the Allstar process? Or are they simply happy to have more hits on nba.com? It's an embarrassment to good basketball, and the NBA should be embarrassed too.

I know I havent said anything new, and I guess until a Stephon Marbury gets selected, I doubt anything will change. Maybe I should have voted... millions of times.

Also, what if there was some prize for the winning players and coaches on each team? Like a donation to their charity or something. It's lame, I know, but at least then the players would have to pretend like they care.

I appreciated the Alonzo Mourning shout out today. Can I add one thing? The man had kidney failure, got a transplant, and continued to play and win a CHAMPIONSHIP with a donated kidney. And in spite of being an achy older player, he wasn't allowed to load up on Vitamin I like so many players of all ages do. I usually sneer at the trite "warrior" crap they like to toss out in the NBA, but this actually comes close.

He wasn't the first to do so: Sean Elliott of the Spurs also played after a kidney transplant (though no championship after the transplant, he did win one while playing through kidney failure, and like Mourning played a key roll). Since I'm receiving a kidney transplant next Friday (6 days!) this is particularly close to my heart. I think we should take the opportunity to honor guys who managed to do something amazing under seriously adverse conditions. Kidney failure is no party, and for these guys to play at the top level wins my admiration. For them to come back and play well after the transplant is an inspiration to all of us who face something similar.

G.O.!!!! While there are still almost 8 minutes left in the 4th (according to espn.com), the Oden Watch is so very on...

It's almost over, and he only has ONE foul.

He also has 18 points, 14 boards, 2 steals and 1 assist. And, he is 6-8 from the line (a fantasy points category in which I constantly fail).

Even if he fouls out in the next 30 seconds, I already feel like he owes me something.

I'm SO glad the Suns won tonight. People realized it was still going to be over a week until the Cards play, and came down from their football highs long enough to realize the Suns were struggling. It sucked. I hoped football would have been a distraction long enough for this current bout of turbulence to pass (like most of them eventually do-- even the indomitable Celtics went through it a few weeks ago), but no. The local media and comment boards have been dominated with "Buy out Shaq!", "Fire Porter! And Kerr! And Sarver! I know he's an owner, but fire him anyway somehow!", "Trade Nash!", "Forfeit the remainder of the season!", "The sky is falling!", et cetera ad nauseam. Bllecchh. The team beat the -- uh-oh -- "scrappy" Hawks tonight, and then they have the Wizard-nerals next up.

Okay, I exaggerated slightly with my local-media reaction, but getting rid of Shaq, Nash, Amaré, Porter, and Kerr were five oft-repeated thoughts. *shakes head* Fire Porter. Yeah, because Reggie Theus, Marc Iavaroni, and everyone else is totally looking for work. Why are people so stupid?
